- Analysis of Martin Luther King Jr by John Lautermilch:
I perceive an atmosphere of union from this painting. Martin Luther King Jr and other citizens have their hands together, which I understand that they were eager to make a change in their society and he was reaching their hands to help them. The focus of this painting is King and the artist, Lautermilch, used dark colors near him, such as brown, yellow, orange, and gray. From my perspective, the audience or buyer for this piece would be citizens who support this non-violent movement and have experienced discrimination throughout their lives. When I first looked at this art work, my sight was caught by Martin Luther King Jr.'s energy and enthusiasm. Lautermilch transmits symbols of faith and motivation. With the artist’s techniques, feelings and emotions of determination are conveyed to the audience. The overall mood of this artwork is based on aspiration and optimism. From my interpretation of this painting, the purpose is to expose its relation with Civil Rights Movement. I consider this aspect because I see hands together and Martin Luther King Jr.’ facial expression is about hope and satisfaction with their recent work and the work in the future. The meaning of this painting is to realize the cause for the creation of the Civil Rights Movement, which was to end racial segregation and allow the African-Americans to be treated as the rest of society. I relate this because this artwork represents the dedication and compromise this group members had with this organization, which would later on benefit numerous discriminated citizens.
